Tips for Writing an Opinion Editorial: Crafting Effective Op-Eds for Advocacy

Opinion Editorials (Op-Eds) are a powerful way for columnists, public officials, community leaders, and advocates—such as those at PHA—to influence public opinion and drive policy change. Unlike Letters to the Editor (LTEs), Op-Eds provide more space to present your case and include a strong call to action. If you’re aiming to make an impact, follow these tips to craft a compelling Op-Ed:

  1. Conduct Thorough Research To maximize the impact of your Op-Ed, start by researching the opinion section of your target publication. Identify topics that haven’t been extensively covered. Editors often seek new perspectives on less-discussed issues, so position your Op-Ed to address these gaps.
  2. Understand Submission Guidelines Check the publication’s editorial page or website for specific submission guidelines. Most Op-Eds are between 500 and 800 words. Knowing the preferred length will help you craft a focused and effective piece that meets the publication’s standards.
  3. Connect on a Personal Level Engage readers by sharing personal stories or experiences related to the topic. Effective Op-Eds often start with a personal anecdote and revisit it at the end. This approach makes your argument more relatable and memorable.
  4. Stay Focused and Specific Focus on a single issue to create a strong argument. Avoid the temptation to cover multiple topics. Use detailed examples, illustrative stories, or relevant data to support your main point. A well-defined and focused Op-Ed is more persuasive.
  5. Incorporate a Clear Call to Action End your Op-Ed with a specific call to action. Whether urging legislators to support legislation or prompting readers to get involved, a clear and actionable conclusion helps drive change and engages your audience.
  6. Include Contact Information Provide your name, agency, address, email, and phone number with your submission. While this information typically won’t be published, it helps the news outlet verify authorship and may be used for follow-up.
  7. Submit and Promote Your Op-Ed Once your Op-Ed is finalized, use our media directory to find contact details for local news outlets and submit your piece. To extend its reach, share your Op-Ed on social media and link to your Mission Moments page to showcase related advocacy efforts.

By implementing these strategies, you can write an effective Op-Ed that not only informs but also motivates readers and policymakers to act on important home care issues.
